6 - 10 March 2023 on Zoom
Southeast Asia is a region with diverse cultures and languages. Scholars based in Southeast Asia are relatively well published in local journals in English and in local languages. However, internationally recognised published research by Southeast Asian social science scholars who are based in the region is very scarce. This is even more so for early career researchers (ECRs) who may lack the experience, exposure and confidence to disseminate their work to an international scholarly audience. At the same time, Southeast Asian ECRs based outside the region may also face challenges in publishing in internationally recognised journals due to language barriers. Moreover, the two groups of emerging social science scholars may lack opportunities to interact and collaborate with each other.
To address these issues, we (Sin Yee Koh, Universiti Brunei Darussalam; and Mai Truong, Mount St. Mary’s University) are organising a week-long online writing workshop from 6th to 10th March 2023. The workshop will run from 07:00 to 08:30 (EDT) / 20:00 to 21:30 (GMT+8) each day. This project is funded by the Women in Southeast Asian Social Sciences network.
The programme will include a mix of presentations and interactive sessions, such as:
- Presentations from experienced journal editors
- Individual or small group writing surgeries
- Small group discussions
We invite expressions of interest from Southeast Asian academic staff and final-year PhD students based in and beyond Southeast Asia possessing social science specialisms broadly related to but not limited to human geography, political science, Southeast Asian Studies and cognate disciplines.
Applicants should:
- be able to participate in the online programme using Zoom;
- commit to participating in the week-long workshop
- be current PhD students or within five years of PhD completion (completed between 2017 and 2022);
- be fluent in English;
- be prepared to submit one working paper before the workshop (by 16 January 2023); and
- commit to submit one article to an international journal within 15 months after the workshop.
The organising committee will select 20 participants from the received expressions of interest. In making the selection, the committee will also strive to ensure a balance of diversity.
Please submit your expression of interest by filing up this form(https://forms.office.com/r/CuueUYbUDT). Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis, until 30 November 2022.
Please send questions about the workshop to Dr. Sin Yee Koh at sinyee.koh@ubd.edu.bn or Dr. Mai Truong at m.t.truong@msmary.edu.

In the course of an academic career in which public engagements are increasingly important, female academics are sometimes subject to a broad range of negative public-facing encounters. Harassment, bullying, trolling and disrespect from a range of audiences are common experiences reported by female academics from both the public as well as within academia itself (including from students). Particularly in early career, female academics also often find themselves feeling pressured to do more administrative duties and emotional labour compared to their male counterparts. Women in think tanks and research and teaching positions are also subject to dimensions of misogyny that are often dismissed and under-discussed, for instance having their expertise undervalued as well as being targeted through paternalistic attitudes. This panel brings together female academics studying and/or working in Southeast Asia who have themselves experienced harassment or bullying in a variety of different ways.
Please join us for a roundtable with presentations from our current grant recipients, followed by a Q&A session and opportunity to exchange ideas for future collaboration.

This time, we broach the ever-exciting world of journal publishing ...
Please join us for a special WiSEASS event with guest speaker Professor Marijke Breuning (University of North Texas) on October 4 @ 10am New York time (10pm Singapore time). Professor Breuning, former American Political Science Review editor and author of the newly-published book How to Get Published in the Best Political Science and International Relations Journals, will share her thoughts and tips about different aspects of the journal publishing process. Joining her to speak about her own recent APSR submission/revision experience will be WiSEASS member Carmen Ho.
To register for the event, please RSVP to admin@wiseass.me. No preparation required -- but bring questions. (While we assume this event will be especially helpful for grad students and early-career scholars, this is an all ages/ranks event ... so come!) We hope to see you there.
Monday, August 9 (10-11.30pm New York) = Tuesday, August 10 (10-11:30am Singapore)
An extraordinarily high proportion of PhD students endure poor mental health with concerns ranging from depression and anxiety, sometimes severe, to suicidal ideation. Nor do those issues vanish upon graduation: academics report enduring effects from stress and pressure. Women tend to be especially hard-hit – a pattern the Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated.
Many of us within the WiSEASS network are either coping with depression, anxiety, and other mental-health concerns; have students, advisees, classmates, or academic colleagues who are (or who we suspect may be) dealing with these issues; or both. Moreover, many WiSEASS members are either in places with limited access to trained counselors for themselves or their students, or in situations in which openly discussing or addressing these concerns would be difficult. This WiSEASS event will focus on both mental health self-care and best practices for recognizing and broaching issues of mental health among colleagues/students/advisees. The session will be devoted to a panel of mental-health professionals/experts from the US, Southeast Asia, and Australia; following the panel we will leave substantial time for open (and anonymized) Q&A.
If you are a woman in Southeast Asian social sciences and would like to RSVP for the event and/or join our mailing list, please send an email to admin@wiseass.me.
The next WiSEASS session is May 17 @ 10pm (New York)/ May 18 @ 10am (Singapore). We will be focusing on issues related to Covid-19. There will be a short (30 minute) roundtable, followed by a 15-minute book highlight session, and conclude with a 45-minute breakout session with a number of hosted areas addressing the following topics:
Archives and in-person physical resource access, limitations on interviews, building networks, observational study;
Graduate program progress: delays, loss of progress on dissertation, insufficient support from committee/home department/wider institution;
Tenure and promotion progress: delays, loss of research productivity, insufficient support from home department/wider institution;
Lost opportunities: missing conferences, networking, chances to showcase my work;
How work-life balance has been upended by COVID: loss of research productivity, intellectual toll; and
How work-life balance has been upended by COVID: emotional toll, professional toll.
To register for the May 17/18 event, please RSVP to admin@wiseass.me. We hope to see you all in a few weeks!
And as always, we want to highlight very recent books by network members. If you have published a new book (solo or multi-authored, no edited volumes) since 2019 and would like to be part of these highlights, please send Sarah Shair-Rosenfield an email (s.shairrosenfield@essex.ac.uk) with the book's title, the year of publication, a one- or two-sentence brief synopsis, and an image of the book cover (if you can).
